Welcome to the Stephenson County Fair Rabbit Barn!

Rabbits first began being bred in captivity in the Middle Ages, and since then have become important to several different industries. They are raised for a wide variety of purposes including meat, fur, wool, research, and pet stock.

Wool and fur from rabbits are used in clothing and textiles — most commonly in things like hats, gloves, and coats. Their meat is lean, versatile, and nutritious, and while not very common in the U.S., rabbit meat is widely enjoyed in other parts of the world, particularly in Europe and Asia. In scientific research, rabbits are commonly used in the production and study of antibodies. Of course, their most well-known role today is as cuddly and beloved pets.

Here at the Stephenson County Fair, rabbits can be entered in a variety of purebred classes — no crossbreds are allowed. Exhibitors show animals in three main categories:

  • Breed Show: Rabbits are judged on their conformation and appearance, according to breed standards. Over 20 breeds are represented here, including Mini Rex, Flemish Giants, New Zealands, and Holland Lops.
  • Showmanship: Exhibitors present their rabbit to the judge, perform a health inspection, and answer questions about rabbit care and breed knowledge.
  • Fur Class: Rabbits are evaluated on the quality and condition of their coat, including texture, color, and density.

All animals shown must have a permanent ear tattoo, and judges will disqualify any entry without full identification and proper entry form details.

Cleanliness and animal welfare are top priorities. As you walk through the tent, you may see exhibitors grooming their animals, cleaning cages, feeding and watering, or just calmly sitting with their rabbits. This is all part of good herdsmanship and a big reason why our rabbit show continues to grow!
