Welcome to the Meat/Boer Goat Barn at the Stephenson County Fair!
Boer goats and other meat-type goats play a vital role in agriculture around the world. While goat meat — also called chevon or cabrito — is less common in the U.S., it is widely consumed in Africa, Europe, Australia, and Latin America. It’s high in protein lower in fat and cholesterol than many other meats, and this also includes chicken!.
At the Stephenson County Fair, these goats are primarily raised for meat production and are shown in market, breeding, and wether (castrated male) classes. Judges evaluate traits such as muscle development, bone structure, and overall conformation. You’ll also see fullblood and percentage Boer goats, as well as commercial entries, each bred for specific qualities.
In this barn, you’ll likely observe exhibitors feeding, grooming, and weighing animals — all part of preparing for competition. Meat goats require strong herdsmanship and daily attention.
